Treatment of Genital Warts: Your Options
Genital warts are very unsightly and may leave hideous scars. They are found in the genital organs and anal area of both male and female who are infected with the human papillomavirus or HPV. Almost all forms of treatment of genital warts involve scarring and depigmentation. The first line of defense is usually a topical solution called Podofilox as it is comparatively cheap. But since the medication is absorbed by the skin and can cause birth defects, it should not be administered to pregnant women.
Cryosurgery with the use of liquid nitrogen is a safer treatment of genital warts if you are pregnant. However, there is also a higher chance of getting a recurrence of the condition several months after cryosurgery is administered.
Although genital warts can disappear without any treatment, unchecked infections can advance to a mass of stalk like growth which could completely cover a particular area such as the anus opening. Therefore, treatment of genital warts should always be done no matter how small the infection is. For those who have a really severe infection involving large warts, surgical removal of the warts is often done. This is a very effective treatment of genital warts but the scarring that may result from the surgery can be quite extensive. Other forms of topical medicines against genital warts has been used in the past but were discontinued due to severe side effects which included fever, renal failure and coma. There were even cases wherein a patient died from the extensive application of a topical medicine.
